Communion
Preaching the gospel through rap
Future priest rapping the Good News of Jesus Christ
Preaching the Good News through a musical genre commonly associated with spreading bad news, rap artist Communion delivers a fresh perspective to modern-day Christianity. Communion, born Álvaro Vega, acknowledges that rap is a powerful means of communication in today’s culture and thus one of the most effective ways to bridge the message of the Gospel to the youth. Raised in Weston, Florida, he began making music at the age of 17 when he was awestruck by the lyrical dexterity of rapper Eminem and the beats of producer Dr. Dre. It wasn’t long before Vega discovered his own musical talents. A self-taught music producer, Vega creates his own beats, writes his own lyrics, and produces all his songs. Although music making came rather naturally to Vega, his rap career began distancing him from God, as his songs contained less than Christian ideals. But it was not long before Vega’s life would dramatically change.
In 2008, Vega had a powerful encounter with God while one day leafing through random passages from a 600-year-old book, The Imitation of Christ, a spiritual Christian classic based on Scripture and written by religious monk Thomas Kempis. The words in the book hit Vega like a ton of bricks and brought him to realize the harsh reality that his current lifestyle would ultimately lead his soul to eternal condemnation. This realization was the pivotal moment in Vega’s life, leading him to make the firm decision to completely surrender to Jesus Christ.
Following this powerful encounter, Vega’s life drastically changed for the better. Furthermore, he received a calling to drop everything, even music, to become a priest. While in seminary, God revealed to him His desire to continue rapping, but this time for Jesus. Adopting the artist name Communion, Vega’s music is described as having a catechetical bent, lyrics that both teach and preach Sacred Scripture. “These days,” he says, “not many Christian artists integrate kerygmatic proclamation and catechesis, two essential tools of evangelization, into their music.” By incorporating bible verses into his rhymes, Vega aims at making Scripture easy to remember. His mission is to strengthen people’s faith, fill them with hope and lead them closer to Christ through his music. His music videos, produced by his brother, Los Angeles filmmaker C M de la Vega, offer spectacular visuals to accompany his faith rhymes. His first single/music video, ‘Creo en Dios’, off his eight track EP, has garnered over 2.1 million hits on YouTube and has been recorded and released in three different languages: English, Spanish, and Italian.
In late 2015, Vega left the seminary, after six years, to discern an even deeper calling: priesthood as a Franciscan friar. Although music is his passion and one he hopes to integrate with a religious vocation in the future, his first love is Jesus Christ and he would give it all up for Him without hesitation. For the time being, when Vega is not in the studio making music, he speaks at various youth groups, parishes, conferences and retreats, sharing his faith through rap.
